Kitchen Cabinet Refacing

A lot of home owners want to find ways to increase the value of their property, and often find themselves looking towards the kitchen. While the kitchen is one of the places families spend most of their time, many people often take this space for granted. Over years of usage, grease, water stains, and other buildup begins to acrue on your cabinet faces, drawers, and countertops. When this happens, most people assume that you have to replace the entire kitchen cabinet, instead of thinking about kitchen cabinet refacing. To reface your kitchen cabinets would save you a large amount of money, over complete replacing the cabinets and doors, and isn't quite as hard as most people make it out to be.

Refacing Kitchen Cabinet Costs

Refacing kitchen cabinets costs substantially less than bringing in a contractor to replace your entire cabinetry. Before you go out and buy new veneers though, there are still a few things that you must think about. Mainly, which type of material you are going to use, for refacing them, and how you intend to pull off the project. Kitchen cabinet door refacing isn't all that difficult, as long as you have some patience, and a bit of creativity.

There are 3 main types of veneers available for refacing your kitchen cabinets, with the main type being RTF, or rigid thermofoils. The other types, plastic and wood laminates, are great to use, but during the current home remodeling trends, more and more buyers are leaning towards RTF because of it's natural beauty, and durability. It is also incredibly expensive, and because it not only looks like a wood surface, but is also incredibly easy to clean, many kitchen remodeling projects have included RTF veneers.

Wood veneers are another great option, but are by far, the most expensive type of refacing materials you can purchase.  The cost of refacing kitchen cabinets with wood, over RTF, is around 25% more overall.  If you had it in your kitchen cabinet refacing ideas that you had to have real wood veneers though, the cost is well worth the investment.  The return that you will receive upon selling the house is much higher with wood, compared to plastic.  Plastic veneers are the cheapest of the three types, but do not provide the same luster, and beauty that wood, and RTF type cabinet veneers do.

Replacing Kitchen Hardware

The last thing that you will need to think about when you are planning your custom kitchen cabinet refacing project, is replacing the hardware on your existing cabinetry. Updating the knobs, handles, and hinges will help your new veneers shine, giving you a very dramatic increase in appeal. While the hardware is off during the refacing process, you can simply install the new kits, and toss out, or sell off the old kitchen hardware. As long as you follow these few tips, you will have a much better time completing the project, and saving yourself a lot of money.
